The Martian, by Andy Weir, has my favorite opening line. (Naughty langiage alert) I'm pretty much fucked. That's my considered opinion. Fucked. He's talking about getting stranded on Mars, so he isn't overselling the situation. You may argue that it is try-hard, but it is at least accurate. The only negative is that the cursing may be a turnoff for some readers.

If you ask me about villains who are evil for the sake of being evil, what I answer with sympathy for the world is that they can still have great internal conflict. Maybe they literally believe they must be evil because they failed many times in life, escaped an abusive home or were left alone and tried really hard to improve themselves only to be called a freak, but when they found no other means to survive besides something they considered evil, they finally found people who supported and loved them, giving them a reason to be loyal to evil itself, they could still be lovely and charming villains.

    • @Marayot

This is a great challenge. It's beautifully done in "The Silent Patient" by Alex Michaelides. They "speak" with their silence, their actions and reactions or the lack of both.

I've accumulated a lot of stuff and tied it into who I am. Hoping to find fulfillment in it. After a while, I realised - instead of me owning all that stuff, it is owning me. Not being able to move freely, think clearly or feel truely. I know by letting go of the things from my past, I can be. I struggle dealing with the sentimental value I attached to things someone gave to me. But that value is a fallace. It reduces the person in the same way as materialism reduces me. We are more than our possessions. Our bond goes deeper. Gifts are just symbols of what is meaningful. Possession of the symbol doesn't change that. Logically, I know it's better to let go, but ask me where that stuff is... I'll show you! Another hurdle is keeping things in case I need it. It's funny how rare it comes true... and when it does, I make do without it because I can't find it. Then, later, I discover the lost treasure. Bury it again, don't bother drawing a map because this time I'll remember! it so happens that I'm actively decluttering this weekend after, after an inciting incident. I feel stronger and more authentic than before I started. Getting clear on what is important to me - who I am, who I want to be - has helped me identify what I want in my life. Thanks for the map, Kate 😊 I would like to see the other 6 pieces

This really resonated with me! I am in the middle of doing a whole-home decluttering and it's true there are objects that I do not use on a regular basis but are difficult to part with because of memories and emotional attachment connected to them. Thanks for sharing these great insights! You inspired me to keep going on my minimalist journey.

I've been decluttering slowly but when I hit a wall is with my family. Both, husband and son, like to collect things and they tend to "fill" the spaces I clear around the house. I managed to save "a corner" for my art but I would like it a bit bigger. Would be interested in boundary setting for this.

❤ of course You need some space, the question is what is going on below the surface. Many men today feel pressured into being tough, and while that can be fine as an element on its own, the question is whether they are conscious of it. Then when you go beneath the surface, the next next questions are whether they are doing it because they feel anxious about the future, or just neglecting taking care of their space because e.g. they have never trained a strong skill of keeping things in order, or they neglect it for some other reason, don't recognize the benefits, etc. Many things can come from the pressure from their environment. If possible, melt any fears with humour, and may You all be in Your decluttering journey optimistic together ❤ Wish You a lot of nice surprises, good mood, step by step progress, peaceful journey and a lot of space ❤

@@Rndm077s this was definitely missing from my writing, sorry! 🙏🏻 Yes, leave their responsibility to them. Well placed roles and responsibility should feel nourishing for everyone, and they build respect, cooperation and rapport. You can give someone the benefit of the doubt, but do it in a "obvious" way, to foster safety... and expect the same from them! Should they have unreasonable expectations about You, don't accept these and in a calm way extend the safety e.g. by saying that You also don't expect time-consuming things from them. Men often dislike being wrong 😂 or to be seen as irrational, so hopefully You can use that as well if needed, so they can save their face and so You can expect fairness from them. Don't know how much of a difference between you and them you're dealing with, but hopefully something helps. ❤️ Definitely treat Yourself fairly and appeal to ideals step by step, hopefully You can have some good rapport in no time.

I imprint a great deal of myself in my characters. Misbeliefs are integral. But sometimes it's hard to let go, be it fiction or real life. For example, I wish there was less struggle and more compatibility, even though that lends itself to non conflict and less gripping fiction. What are things worth without a fight ?

You know what I want to know? How can I create a story as beautiful as Downton Abbey with the amount of characters that they have? For me personally I'm so attached to all the characters that it doesn't bother me to pin point a main character. Pretty much the Crowley family and the indentured servants are the main focal point obviously. I have made characters and I'm still building a plot but I want to find a way that I can accomplish writing a story where you can almost love all the characters. You almost know every downton abbey character individually and that's what I think makes the show so incredibly good. I want that for my own story characters.
